GUN CHARGES & WEAPONS CHARGES
Based in Salt Lake City, Intermountain Legal provides comprehensive criminal defense representation to clients throughout Utah, including people accused of gun charges and other weapons-related crimes.
Utah Gun & Weapons Laws
People who own, carry, sell, or otherwise deal in guns and weapons are subject to a myriad of complex state and federal laws. For example, you do not need a permit to simply own a gun in Utah; however, if you wish to carry a concealed weapon, you will need a special permit. Minors are allowed to carry guns for hunting and target shooting with parental permission and adult supervision, but it is illegal to sell a gun to anyone under 21 years old.
At Intermountain Legal, we support Utah citizens' Second Amendment right to bear arms, defending clients against a range of weapons-related charges, from violent crimes to isolated permit violations. Our experience includes:
- Homicide with a gun
- Armed robbery
- Assault with a deadly weapon
- Possession or sale of illegal weapons, such as defaced pistols or revolvers
- Carrying a concealed weapon without a permit
- Defense of restricted persons, including undocumented immigrants, people with protective orders against them, and people with a past felony convictions
- Illegal discharge
- Brandishing a weapon
The most serious gun and weapons-related charges can carry severe penalties in Utah. Violent crimes with firearms, criminal possession of firearms, and criminal negligence with firearms may all be prosecuted as felonies punishable by extensive prison sentences and large fines. Even if you did not have specific intent to intimidate or harm someone with a gun or weapon, you may still face serious charges. Negligently discharging a firearm in a manner that significantly endangers any person, or discharging a firearm into any habitable structure, is classified as a third degree felony, and if bodily injury to any person results, the offense can be enhanced to a second or first degree felony.
When a client is charged with a gun or weapons-related crime, we pursue a comprehensive defense strategy, thoroughly analyzing all possibilities to negate the allegations. In numerous cases, we have been successful in having charges significantly reduced or even dismissed altogether.
