October 12, 2011Courtroom Etiquette 101 | Utah Criminal Defense Attorney Tip of the Week
Another week and another Utah criminal defense attorney tip! Today, we’re talking about the dos and don’ts of the courtroom. It’s not a place where anything goes; in fact, there are a few important restrictions that might surprise you. Let’s jump in:
What Doesn’t Work
Have you ever seen shorts in a courtroom? Yeah, we didn’t think so. That’s because in Utah, wearing shorts to an arraignment or any official court proceeding is not a great idea. Courts usually don’t allow you to wear shorts, mini skirts, or halter tops.
Changing your ringtone to the Avengers theme song and leaving it at full volume is not a good option either. It’s best to power down your phone or leave it in your car while you’re in a courtroom. This prevents awkward interruptions like phone calls, text messages, or alarms.
Planning to attend your high school reunion the same day as your hearing? That scenario is unlikely to work out, especially if traveling is involved. It’s best to keep your day wide open. You never know how long court might take.
What Works
Make an effort to know the court rules before you go in. Here are some basic guidelines to follow:
- Dress professionally and appropriately.
- Leave prohibited items in your car.
- Treat the judge and others respectfully.
- Avoid chatting with others in the courtroom while waiting to hear your case.
- Leave your children at home unless they’re directly involved in the hearing.
Adhering to these rules can help your case. If your judge observes you disobeying basic instructions before your case has even begun, they’re likely to make a quick judgment.
